I'm currently re-scanning some colour negatives for an upcoming exhibition. Although this is one of my favourite frames I am yet unsure if I will include it in the selection, because it might not fit.
As you know, I would have normally called this another snapshot. But the longer I look at it the more I can see: The numerous parallel horizontal and vertical lines, the warm midtones and the cool shadows, the men on the vehicle goiing down Gold Street, possibly seeking to dig up something The old carton that has been sitting there for a while right at the corner to Gold Street, the green light suggesting to continue past Gold St. The red marks on the pavement looking like blood. the two fences clearly seperating the Gold area from the rest. The various textures on the bridge from shiny on the bottom to grunge to the mesh of the fence. Etc. Etc.
i read the street sign and stopped to look at all the colours and elements. took a photo, knowing i have colour film in my medium format camera. then they appeared.. and i took that frame. i don't know if it makes it any better than if I had just taken this one instinctively but i wouldn't have been able to capture it if I hadn't seen the possibility of an interesting photo before.
often snapshot photographs include much more than you might think at first. nobody asks in the end if you saw something coming or waited for it for a while or simply captured it on instinct. the image counts after all, how and why you have captured is "nebensächlich".
i agree though that this particular photo is great for analysing and traveling "through"... but for most people it doesn't seem worth a second look (in the internet)... it is not spectacular enough compared to what we're used to see on a site like DA but that's why I will probably include it in my upcoming exhibition printed something like 80x80cm - because that is what it actually deserves imo.
I think it would look great printed at a large size (as you suggest).
love it..
