I like that most of the image isn't particularly confronting, I imagine most photographers who end up in service just look for conflict and drama for the most part, this frame however is more effective and believable in the man who looks very young on one knee with most of the group standing with their backs to him, the only conflict is in his somewhat expressive eyebrows.
Plus as ~thesain said before, tones are wicked.
Military photography is some of my favourite to view, somehow I wish to get the chance to do some myself but I know war and I are unlikely to ever meet face to face unless somebody finally decides to just invade New Zealand, it's been a very long time since England did it.

I remember seeing blog posts of your yours many months back with your photographs from the mandatory service. I am going to search through your blog again because I remember them all being very striking. You documented it incredibly well and your voice definitely carried through.
This image is fantastic and your printing is perfection. What dilution did you use for the selenium? 1:9? 1:20?

That is a sexy print. I don't have a darkroom so I've never been able to print anything, but this photo makes me want to print.

I think armies are only good for photographs, computer games and strategic thinking.

How do you look back at your time in the army? I'm wondering about it since we don't have conscription anymore here in Holland.

you know. i could write a long answer where i explain more and go into details.. but i'm a bit lazy right now so i'll make it short.

it was some of the worst months in my life. i was surrounded by idiots and had to follow stupid orders but i've learned some things and it is never a bad thing to see how else life can be. you also get to know different people than you usually would and in my case i took the chance to take some really interesting photographs.

so it was a waste of time but i made the best out of it.
