working on my portfolio - i once again stumbled on this shot.

taken back in 2008 during the european soccer championship in vienna (where i had to work 90% of the time).

this was one of the rare evenings where i had some time to shoot for myself. it was croatia vs. turkey. outside there were hundreds of people on the street - where i was mainly taking photos.

when i saw some turkish fans in that saloon, i knew i had to get in to take a photo.

beside the moment and the aestethics, i like that cultural clash happening on the photo. women with headscarf cheering for their team in a hair salon.

This is fantastic!
I love the reflections in the mirror, and that blurred leg is a highlight of the picture.

Definitely one of my all time favourites from you! It's so good, such a powerful image, you really couldn't even have planned a better shot if you tried. I could go on about all the elements that make this photograph what it is, but you obviously know them already. ;) I love moments like these, it's reflective of the absurdity in life. Sometimes you just come across a moment so weird like this, that tells a story on so many different levels, true social commentary. Not even going to complain about the saturation, that garish look works for me this time!

What's absurd about this moment? Or rather, how are their headscarves any relevant to the absurdity of this moment?

The possibility that you find it weird that women with headscarves support their national football teams or that they visit beauty salons says much more about you (and coxi) than the moment that was photographed.

That, I would say, is the true social commentary here.

just to make my point clear. i don't find it absurd to see women with headscarves in a hair salon in general, but here definitely a clash of cultures got captured.

for me the posters surrounding the fans, showing women with different hairstyles on the right and a woman waving her hair on the left, create an ironic situation.

i also don't see how i am judging here. the photo captures a situation that happened like that - i don't see what's wrong with that.

You must be confused. I did not at any point in my comment refer to their headscarves as the entity I found absurd in this image. There are many things I find absurd about this image, and none of them has anything to do with the nationality of the subjects. I find the garish colours of the salon absurd, I find the way they are all dressed exactly the same absurd, I find the way the girl on the far right is mimicking the pose of the player on TV absurd. It is simply a bizarre but powerful scene that he has been stumbled across here. You also seem to take the word absurd in a negative way, whereas I am using it in a different context.

Ironically by jumping straight to the conclusion that my comment was about the women's national identity, it is you who seems to be the one who is most reflective of true social commentary.
